About this artwork
This image shows the circus in Krasnodar, a city in southern Russia that has become difficult for Western tourists to access since the imposition of sanctions against Russia. Like other photos in the "Future of the Past" series, it depicts a utopian building that seems to defy the laws of gravity. In its dilapidated state, the building symbolizes the end of a political and economic utopia of the Soviet Union, but also the principle of "bread and…
circuses" that dictators, as well as other political systems, have adopted. Indeed, the "circus culture" of the former Soviet Union is remarkable, as virtually every major city had its own circus building.

Credentials
- Works on commission
Harald Hund works with video, photography, and sculpture, drawing on an academic background in fine arts and theater studies. She employs experimental film, editing, and animation techniques, combining modern architecture with metaphorical and socio-critical aspects, and transforming everyday reality into absurd visions through subversive methods. Her works are ambiguous, marked by utopia and its failure, and evoke feelings in the viewer ranging from wonder and irritation to contemplation.
