His work from this period, described by critic Andrew Forge as "painting… about the meaning of painting," embodies the "paradoxes" of fluctuating texture and fragmentary line. In 1967, critic Gene Baro praised Cohen's pieces for their "overallness" and "unitary impact." The recent re-discovery of Cohen and his AI painting exhibition at the Whitney in New York has revived his recognition.
