About this artwork
The Xhosa people of Southern Africa emphasize traditional practices and customs inherited from their forefathers. These rituals and ceremonies are still practiced today, but many urbanized Xhosa people do not follow them rigidly.
One traditional ritual that is still regularly practiced is the manhood ritual, Ulwaluko, which is a secret rite that marks the transition from boyhood to manhood. After a ritual circumcision, the initiates (abakhwetha)… live in isolation for several weeks, often in the mountains. During the process of healing they smear white clay on their bodies and observe numerous taboos.

Hassan Kalenga is an African-American artist whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Spain and Japan. Through his storied artworks, he hopes to reinvigorate the interest in African art across the globe, bringing it back to the forefront of artistic consciousness. In addition, Kalenga believes that the awareness and appreciation of traditional African customs are needed more than ever to strengthen the bonds of those who have been displaced with their homeland.
