About this artwork
This is a painting of a woman being burned at the stake. It was painted during a time when the Taliban were supressing all women in Afghanistan, and removing their freedoms and dignity. It depicts the unjust maligning of women all throughout the world and throughout the ages, but the woman remains defiant and courgeous in the face of opposition. Her hands are not tryly bound, and the fire is not truly fire in this rendition, symbolizing her capacity…
to escape her plight either alone or with the help of others.
