About this artwork
The artwork entitled “We all must laugh” is created in mixed media on a 100 x 140 cm canvas. It addresses the artificial self-presentation of people and uses a mask-like figure as a prototype for contemporaries who adorn themselves with branded paraphernalia in order to be socially respected.
At the center of the image is an abstracted figure whose body is overlaid with various symbols and lines. The figure wears clothing that suggests brand awareness… and embodies the superficiality of modern self-presentation.
The image also includes a wine bottle and cocktail glasses, representing excessive indulgence. These symbols lift the mood and conjure a fake smile on the figure's face, which underlines the irony of the subject matter depicted. The work invites the viewer to reflect on authenticity and the effects of consumerism on the human psyche.
Helena Kaschurow, a trained painter, uses acrylic paints and mixed media on canvas or wood. With her stylistic elements from pop art, minimalism and neo-expressionism, she creates works that oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Clear contours meet expressive elements and flat color compositions. Her intense, lively works convey deep emotions and tell stories about interpersonal relationships and self-representation in society, often with a sarcastic component.
