About this artwork
A bird-like cartoon creature and a Christ head in a tropical landscape:
The bird-like cartoon creature can represent nature and its diversity, especially in a humorous or playful context. The Christ head, on the other hand, refers to the divine. The combination of both elements in a tropical landscape represents a utopian harmony and interplay between the natural world and an imaginary divine sphere. Birds are often associated with freedom and the… soul's ability to transform. Combined with a Christ head, which often represents love, renewal and spiritual salvation, this image symbolizes the possibility of personal transformation and renewal within the abundance and diversity of nature. The title comes from Claude Levi-Strauss' famous ethnological work "Sad Tropes".
Heribert Heere uses collage, paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolor), digital media, and photography; his artistic development was honed at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and shaped by art historical studies. With sophisticated stylistic pluralism, he combines old and new, representational and abstract, and the trivial with high culture in his works, allowing collage, painting, and montage to flow seamlessly into one another. His works create a poetic tension and invite viewers to reflect on the constant metamorphosis of our culture and to experience the interplay of meanings on an emotional level.
