About this artwork
In my work, I apply thin oil paint very spontaneously to express the dynamic shapes and movements of nature. The powerful, abstract shapes contrast dramatically with the calm, blue background, symbolizing the duality of calm and chaos in our world. This composition speaks of the tireless energy and constant change that symbolizes our life itself. The use of strong, expressive colors invites every viewer to immerse themselves in a world of deep emotions.
Herwig Port is one of the most versatile painters who makes full use of his craftsmanship. As a young child, he spent a lot of time in his grandfather's studio and was taught oil painting techniques. This enabled him to develop a broad spectrum of painterly expressiveness. Herwig Port creates luminous oil paintings characterized by harmonious coloration. His technique is based on thin, translucent layers of paint that allow the white of the canvas to shine through and their luminosity is reminiscent of church windows. His themes are the beauty of transience, expressed through autumnally colored vine leaves and the play of light in mountain and lake landscapes, which he often depicts in a highly abstract or almost photorealistic manner. In his work, it is important to him to always maintain a childlike curiosity in order to remain creative. This creativity lends his works their special expressiveness.
