About this artwork
Winter 2026 begins with very low temperatures. I'm very happy about this, as I can finally go outside again and dedicate myself to my ice paintings!
This type of process painting with different binder recipes and pigments has become an integral part of my work.
The results are just as exciting as the painting process itself.
In my more recent works, I apply fine oil glazes in transparent colors over the dried canvas. This creates works of even… greater elegance and tension.

Herwig Port is one of the most versatile painters who makes full use of his craftsmanship. As a young child, he spent a lot of time in his grandfather's studio and was taught oil painting techniques. This enabled him to develop a broad spectrum of painterly expressiveness. Herwig Port creates luminous oil paintings characterized by harmonious coloration. His technique is based on thin, translucent layers of paint that allow the white of the canvas to shine through and their luminosity is reminiscent of church windows. His themes are the beauty of transience, expressed through autumnally colored vine leaves and the play of light in mountain and lake landscapes, which he often depicts in a highly abstract or almost photorealistic manner. In his work, it is important to him to always maintain a childlike curiosity in order to remain creative. This creativity lends his works their special expressiveness.
