About this artwork
Inspired by the visionary spirit of my artist friend Ty Waltinger, who passed away much too soon, I began experimenting with innovative formulations that visualize the natural freezing process in the winter of 2024/25. What began modestly with simple acrylic crystals grew—through the use of precious binders, oils, and resins—into a sensual process painting in which art and nature commune.

"Frozen Blue" bears the traces of this search: cyan ink,… shellac ink in deep indigo, the finest cobalt blue, larch resin, and select oils merge on the canvas to create a crystalline landscape of light and stillness. Tiny ice shapes permeate the composition like frozen breaths, while soft shades of blue glow in smooth transitions—a visual poem about acceptance and letting go, about failure that ultimately transforms into beauty.
A unique piece that captures the magic of the moment!
Herwig Port is one of the most versatile painters who makes full use of his craftsmanship. As a young child, he spent a lot of time in his grandfather's studio and was taught oil painting techniques. This enabled him to develop a broad spectrum of painterly expressiveness. Herwig Port creates luminous oil paintings characterized by harmonious coloration. His technique is based on thin, translucent layers of paint that allow the white of the canvas to shine through and their luminosity is reminiscent of church windows. His themes are the beauty of transience, expressed through autumnally colored vine leaves and the play of light in mountain and lake landscapes, which he often depicts in a highly abstract or almost photorealistic manner. In his work, it is important to him to always maintain a childlike curiosity in order to remain creative. This creativity lends his works their special expressiveness.
