About this artwork
In this portrait of David Bowie, my focus was on the construction and destruction of the picture plane. This creates a very vulnerable image of the musician.
I used various media such as varnish, acrylic paint, and inks, which I layered and then scraped or sanded off. I used a smooth wooden board as a support.
The painting is framed with a shadow gap frame designed by me.

Herwig Port is one of the most versatile painters who makes full use of his craftsmanship. As a young child, he spent a lot of time in his grandfather's studio and was taught oil painting techniques. This enabled him to develop a broad spectrum of painterly expressiveness. Herwig Port creates luminous oil paintings characterized by harmonious coloration. His technique is based on thin, translucent layers of paint that allow the white of the canvas to shine through and their luminosity is reminiscent of church windows. His themes are the beauty of transience, expressed through autumnally colored vine leaves and the play of light in mountain and lake landscapes, which he often depicts in a highly abstract or almost photorealistic manner. In his work, it is important to him to always maintain a childlike curiosity in order to remain creative. This creativity lends his works their special expressiveness.
