About this artwork
A mesmerising effect in your space with this depth-creating Sculpture into a frame art work.
The story...
"Thanatos" is the death drive representing self-destruction and aggression.
It co-exists with Eros, the life drive, representing survival, reproduction and creation.
Thanatos only can exist as the Eros exists.
The land and barren trees are strongly showing Thanatos while the heart and the bird with a branch are driving the life at the same time. …
The self is embracing both drives, expressing Thanatos while reaching the hand towards the heart.
Being aware and embracing of Thanatos, the death drive, is important when we know it comes from the life drive.
Only the darkness can show the light.
The original art work is made with 100% premium couverture chocolate and cacao butter into 3D sculptural form then taken into a photography to Giclée print.
Hyunju An, born in South Korea and based in Melbourne, is a sculptor and visual artist who crafts profound chocolate carvings, drawing from her background in psychology and patisserie. Using a tourne knife, she meticulously sculpts solid, tempered couverture chocolate—eschewing moulds for a raw, direct technique—resulting in rough, scratched, and irregular surfaces. Her works embody psychological ambivalence, inviting viewers into a realm of vulnerability and introspection, and encouraging gentle self-acceptance through the beauty of imperfection.
