In crafting this piece, I embraced a vivid, bold approach with acrylic and graphite, choosing a vibrant red background that vibrantly sets off the majestic parrot. This bird, donned in a quirky Mexican attire, symbolizes resilience and adaptability. Its intense gaze and sharp beak reflect a spirit of audacity. Sarape is the name of the colorful Mexican blanket. And the painting is my version of the Lotería* card no.34. I represented it with a macaw wearing the sarape and a sombrero.
*Lotería is a well know card game, with 54 illustrated cards and it is similar to bingo.

Ilaamen Pelshaw is a Guatemalan painter based in the United States whose work has been featured in solo and group shows nationally. Growing up with a grandfather who was an artist and muralist, Pelshaw became interested in art herself and developed a practice centered around positivity and warmth. Mostly working in acrylic on canvas, her work is always colorful and illustration based, whether through quirky animal portraits or paintings of Latin American culture and crafts.
