This painting is part of my series on Latin American Folk Tales, and is inspired by the tale of "La Llorona" (The Crying Lady)
The legend of "La Llorona" (The Weeping Woman) is a popular Latin American story about a woman who lost her children after they drowned in a river. Tormented by guilt, the woman wanders lonely rivers and lakes, weeping and searching for her lost children.… Her wail, described as heartbreaking, can be heard at night, and her spectral figure terrifies those who see or hear her.

Ilaamen Pelshaw is a Guatemalan painter based in the United States whose work has been featured in solo and group shows nationally. Growing up with a grandfather who was an artist and muralist, Pelshaw became interested in art herself and developed a practice centered around positivity and warmth. Mostly working in acrylic on canvas, her work is always colorful and illustration based, whether through quirky animal portraits or paintings of Latin American culture and crafts.
