About this artwork
In this painting, as well as its companion piece, Confido 2, the artist explores the idea of children and young people as heralds or harbingers of the future. This series was started in response to the School Strike for Climate Change movement and the enthusiastic commitment and outrage of young people everywhere. The series will be continued after being halted temporarily by Covid-19.
Rather than refer to more overt rhetoric, the artist examines… symbolic language, such as hand signals, semaphores or Bliss symbols. In the Confido paintings, the subjects are using one of a set of Renaissance hand gestures, Chirologia or Chironomia, often used in paintings and referred to by John Bulwer in his 1644 book, Philocophus or The Deafe and Dumbe mans friend. The gesture is known as Confido, which translates as "I trust" but can also be interpreted as "I am relied upon."
