About this artwork
When I was working with Helene Schjerfbeck's "Red Apples," I was moved less by the subject matter than by her approach to the canvas. The fact that she can't bring herself to simply fill a surface with color has stayed with me. I've been reflecting on what it means today not to simply fill a surface. For me, it means not becoming decorative. Not becoming complacent. Every mark must have a purpose.
My work is not a copy, but rather originated from… a sketch. I opened up the surface, left the paint exposed, and broke the edges. The wood, as the painting surface, is allowed to remain visible. I'm not aiming for tranquility, but for tension.
In our time, which is anything but quiet, even still life cannot be just quiet.
