You are not born a woman, you become one.
No biological, psychic, economic destiny defines the aspect that the female of man has within society, it is the whole of history and civilization that elaborates that intermediate product between the male and the castrated we call woman.
Only the mediation of others can assign to an individual the part of what the other is.
For me it is a key passage from Simone de Beauvoir's "Second Sex". I felt the… need to write it on this body, engrave it in the wood of the sculpture.
It is plum wood and is very purplish, beautiful to work with; I sanded its surface to a high gloss to make a strong contrast with the engraved words.

Irene Giannaccini is an experienced sculptor based in Italy whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in France and Norway. Inspired by the texts of feminist philosphers such as Simone de Beavoir and Germaine Greer, she represents women through the female form in search for "her liberation". Giannaccini employs varying techniques from ancient to contemporary and favors materials such as marble, wood, bronze, and terra cotta.
