About this artwork
"Dethroned - Diptych" is the second in a series of paintings dedicated to exploring the myths surrounding the concept of womanhood, from the ambiguity of girlhood to underlying discourses related to faith and religion.
These two pieces consist of four separate paintings that were painted on top of each-other to create the illusion of double exposure.
My apologies for the photos. These works were created during lockdown and photographed at home… since the studio I usually use is still closed.
Painting technique: The painting technique I mostly use resembles the Flemish method of layering thin veneers of paint between layers of varnish. I start with pencils, pastels and varnish. After that I paint a lighter layer with acrylics and finish with a couple of thicker layers using a combination of mediums, often acrylics and oils, but sometimes gold leaf and inks.

Iva Troj has won several awards for her paintings and has exhibited in the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States. Troj's creative expression is influenced by her grandmother who told her that beauty is 'imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete'. This dichotomy is present in everything that she does. While there is violence, greed, and mediocrity, there is also beauty. Her painting techniques are akin to the Flemish, layering thin veneers of paint between layers of varnish.
