About this artwork
In the late 1880's Navaho weavers in the American southwest intimated a style of weaving called "eye dazzlers' to attract American and European buyers. These paintings are inspired by that work. An example of the "eye dazzler" design can be seen in the photo accompanying this painting.
To say that I, J Fitzpatrick am a self-taught painter with formal training is to miss the point. Yes, I have had formal training. yes, I am by nature an auto didact but for me painting is more experiential than an, assertive initiated act. For me painting is intentionaly not doing or thinking anything. It is sitting waiting quietly for what I can best describe as a visit from something outside myself. It may be there right away or it might not come for days. And then suddenly it is there-- an image that had not been there moments before and I go with it.
