About this artwork
It is commonly said about winter that it is colorless of gray, but I find it quite the opposite! In this painting, I was aiming to capture a kind of overall warm glow, which I witnessed outside my kitchen window in early morning. Everything, even the shadows were bathed in this golden atmosphere, hence the title, "Winter Gold".
I used a pattern of small rectangles of color and metallic gold to emphasize this feeling. I took pleasure in the huge black… walnut tree, now without its leaves. which in other seasons hide the tree's architecture.. The house has been reduced to geometric shapes, washed with pinks, oranges and soft blues. As I painted, I remembered the work of one of the artists who influenced me in my early days, Pierre Bonnard. I understood his way of getting colors to spread from one surface to another.
One peculiar aspect of this painting is the way the gold changes as you walk around the room.
