About this artwork
A wall is sometimes more than just a barrier, a structure designed to to keep intruders out. This old brick wall was seen in Beaufort, South Carolina, an historic town near Charleston. I was attracted by the light and shadow, the old bricks that had stood for ages, weathering. I found an opening around a corner and discovered the wall was protecting an ancient graveyard, surrounded by gardens and an old church. The crumbling tombstones suggested… stories, lives lived and lost. I realized the wall now felt different, becoming something metaphysical. Was it perhaps a barrier between life and death?
James Griffin is a well-known painter with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Pratt Institute, recognized for his five-decade career in illustration and his consistent focus on personal art. He masterfully blends realistic techniques with intuition, allowing subconscious dream imagery and symbolism to emerge through slow-drying acrylics—brushing, scraping, and squeegeeing the canvas in an organic process. His style is rooted in realism but remains open to discovery, often evoking the mystery of dreams. Griffin’s paintings convey a profound sense of wonder, spirituality, and the emotional resonance of simply being alive.
