About this artwork
These strange forms may be deep sea animals, or microscopic creatures, or things from another universe. The spiral theme continues here, but in a very organic form, implying they were traced by ancient animals, etched over time into rock.
I started with textures abd color blending, drawing into the paint with various tools, until it began to have a feeling of a whole ecology. At one point, I saw a red, undulating shape that became another creature… in this primordial soup.

James Griffin is a well-known painter with a Bachelor of Fine Art from Pratt Institute, recognized for his five-decade career in illustration and his consistent focus on personal art. He masterfully blends realistic techniques with intuition, allowing subconscious dream imagery and symbolism to emerge through slow-drying acrylics—brushing, scraping, and squeegeeing the canvas in an organic process. His style is rooted in realism but remains open to discovery, often evoking the mystery of dreams. Griffin’s paintings convey a profound sense of wonder, spirituality, and the emotional resonance of simply being alive.
