About this artwork
A face appeared on my canvas. I continued with it to see who it was, thinking it would be an historical person. However, the face surprised me as it became more developed, the face of a young girl, hair wild with energy, the eyes, soft but hiding strength beneath. I have long been thinking about the brilliance of children. A majority are born with genius, but only a few survive until adulthood with it intact.. A study by the Land foundation studied…
a group of children from a very young, testing them every year for what they considered to be genius. In the early stage, almost 75% were considered genius. By the time they reached adulthood, that number had dropped to only 2% ! What happened?
Our culture encourages standardized thinking, discourages daydreaming and play as "childish". What if play and imagination were in fact the keys to genius? This painting explores this subject, beginning with the eyes and the unruly hairm I saw her as the embodiment of intelligence and imagination.
