About this artwork
Paintings from the "Sensual Cities" series are not city views. These are Jan Astner's travel notes, a catalog of feelings and sensations. It is a moment spent over coffee in the square, the smell of the street during a walk, the mood of conversation with the inhabitants, it is a memory that remains after leaving.
Sensual, showing much more than appearances, hiding secrets, protecting their taboos. Sophisticated, coquettish, but also shameless, promiscuous,… undone. The city of Jan Astner. Previewed, viewed from the inside, from the inside, from the bottom. From the hidden page. Sensual cities. They show their true face only if we carefully look into it, we go beyond the conventional perception frame and allow ourselves to absorb their real face. Because what they show outside is their image, what they hide is the truth about ourselves.
