The work is Process Art. It is made up of small split wood parts fixed with wire to a wooden panel, on which is drawn a geometrical pattern with graphite, on top of which are fixed the split wooden elements. The work is also Picturesque Art. According to William Gilpin, theoretician of the Picturesque movement of garden design of the late 18th century, roughness and ruggedness are ensigns of the Picturesque. The split wooden parts are within the… scope of this definition. Other followers of the Picturesque movement in art of the 20th and 21st centuries are Serra or Smithson. The graphite and the wooden parts put on top are, furthermore, added in an additive manner of the Process Art.
Jan de Weryha is an award-winning sculptor with a master's degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Through process art and picturesque art, he marries wood splitting into surprising forms and textures. With his unique style, he explores the deep materiality of his sculptures and reliefs. His art is a powerful expression of his encounter with the material—rich, honest, and full of emotion.
