About this artwork
"Dee" is the third large painting from the "Human noise" serie. Triggered by his experimental work "Captain Nemo", Jan explores a new path of ultimate simplicity. It's combined with his fascination of rocks, which - under the microscope - show an entire world of infinite details. The simple shapes and the underlying richness of details create a contrast which leaves you contemplating existence and the noise we humans create.

Jan Smeltekop is an experienced Dutch painter who was nominated for the prestigious Royal Award for Modern Painting in 1985. Self-taught and driven by a childhood curiosity, he explores the relationship between figurative thought and abstract execution. He takes a spontaneous approach to the creative process, which results in an overall intriguing aesthetic that showcases both freedom and control, sense and ambiguity.
