About this artwork
This piece is a collaboration with my son who painted the vase while I gathered and pressed the flowers.
Most of the flowers have been grown in my garden or picked from the hedgerows that surround our home set between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. It’s a place where wild and cultivated plants live side by side and I try to reflect that balance in my work.
The tall purple flower is common corncockle a delicate wild plant that attracts… the bees. Alongside it are buttercups simple and familiar but full of light—they always feel as though they are shining out from the painting.
The remaining flowers are grown from seed in my garden, including astrantia and hydrangea. Hydrangeas are a particular favourite of mine. I dry them to use throughout my home so they carry meaning both in my work and in my everyday life.
Together this piece captures a moment between garden and hedgerow and a collaboration between generations.
