About this artwork
In this pastel painting, I sought to capture the delicate spirit of a horse through minimalist and semi-abstract forms. The soft, flowing strokes invite you to feel its quiet strength and grace. Bringing this piece into your space will fill it with serene energy and a gentle reminder of nature’s quiet beauty.
Below is an excerpt from “The Dream of Freedom” by Art Critic, Branka Beberijan, which best expresses my intent: "...the greatest artistic… care may be seen in the depth and beauty of the animal’s eyes: it seems as if, when you look at them closely, there is a search for that enigmatic point around which radiates the essence of the horse's beauty. Janette's art is an expression of her inner world of fantasy and dreams, filled with artistic strength that gives shape to her ideas and thoughts. At the same time, her unique artistic expression is a formidable contribution to the place of privilege that the horse holds in the history of art."
Janette Lockett is a self-taught painter working primarily with pastels applied to art board, inspired by her lifelong passion for horses and her experiences living in Andalusia, Spain. She employs abstract and minimalist techniques, using sponges to create ethereal, movement-filled compositions often devoid of background, focusing mainly on equestrian themes and occasionally nudes. Her art radiates a sense of spiritual freedom and invites viewers to experience peace and emotional transcendence, even if just momentarily.
