About this artwork
I saw Billy and he gave me permission to paint him. I was working on this piece during a solo exhibition in the Oriel Gallery, County Antrim, when a young man who was passing asked who I was painting. I told him the gentleman was called Billy and he said it was perfect because it was his dad!
As a result of this chance encounter, I got to meet Billy, The Gentle Man. He talked about his past and the many tattoos which reflected different periods… in his life. This inspired me to incorporate the tattoos into the oil painting. If you look at the wrist you can see how I pulled the snake tattoo off the skin and brought it to life.
The tattoos became the background, representating his past. When his family saw the painting they asked if he sat for me wearing his blue velvet jacket and it came as a surprise when I explained that I was not aware that he owned such a jacket!
Janice Lightowler is an accomplished multi award winning oil painter with a BA Hons Degree in Art and Design from Ulster University, Northern Ireland, whose practice grew amidst personal and political upheaval. She employs meticulous, naturalistic techniques on a large scale, using a single tiny brush per canvas to achieve radiant luminosity and astonishing detail in her landscapes and portraits. The brush is then attached to the back of the canvas and remains with the piece. Starting with only a few marks on the canvas, Janice pushes the concept of standard composition. All these techniques have been developed to help her manage and control extreme spinal pain and the complexities of each piece consumes her. Her emotionally charged works blend nostalgia, despair, hope, and pain, inviting viewers into a space where beauty and suffering coexist, ultimately uplifting and deeply moving all who encounter them.
