Year of the Pig is a photographic series all shot in the year 2019 during the Chinese year of the Golden Pig- a symbolic time of celebration, fortune, and vibrant colors. The juxtaposition of these characteristics with the political and… social climate in the United States created a complex environment and dissonance, particularly for women. In Year of the Pig, the cheeky confidence and playful attitude of the women against colorful backdrops communicates unashamedly knowledge in the power of our own sexuality. Simultaneously, using humor to deflect the absurdity of provincial judgments from the sex-shaming attitude of American culture.

Javiera Estrada is a multimedia artist who was born in Mexico in 1981, and moved in 1989 to the USA where she still lives today. Her principal medium is photography; she takes both portraits and fine art photographs, and also creates short films and mixed media works.
