About this artwork
Broken Bond is named for, and for me was a reflection on, what would remain standing and what would be lost in the face of the breakdown of important relationships? What will be left standing in the face of the degradation and outright breaking important ties? Ties—to a lover, to children, to one’s home, to shared friends and community, to the fruits of shared efforts and memories. I was thinking about the parallels of changes in my life at middle…
age and the life of a sculptor I was acquainted with who was much my senior. My life was changing due to divorce and his was changing due to ill health and the need to move cross country. We were both sorting out what we would have to break with, what would be left standing, and how we would start the next chapter.

Credentials
- Works on commission
Jayson Lowery, a sculptor with an MFA from Wayne State University and teaching experience at William & Mary, primarily works with stone and metals but explores a wide range of materials and construction methods. His technique emphasizes handcraft, blending carving, welding, casting, and modeling into abstract forms reminiscent of construction sites or ancient artifacts. Through his process, he expresses entropy, ambiguity, and emergence, inviting the viewer to find both deterioration and possibility in his evocative, poetic sculptures.
