Nose art, literally "art on the nose (of planes)", is made up of "war paintings ... The most frequent subjects were pin-ups.
If we have to look for a primary role in the pin-up, it is there: it must fill an emotional gap (and not only emotional…) in these soldiers often very far from home and their more or less official “girlfriends”.
Indeed, they take up typically macho stereotypes.
