About this artwork
Its name comes from the abbesses present in the abbey of Montmartre founded by Louis le Gros in 11341. Certain streets below, which led to the abbey, in the current 9th arrondissement, bear the name of the most famous, such as Marguerite de Rochechouart , Louise-Émilie de La Tour d'Auvergne, Marie-Eléonore de Bellefond and Catherine de La Rochefoucauld2. Rue de La Tour des Dames (9th… arrondissement) & rue des Dames (17th arrondissement), located on the territory of the old abbey, also owe their name to them.
