About this artwork
This recycled metal car part mask is created using the response method. In this case, the artist responded to the shapes of the blades of a torque converter from an automatic transmission. When the these recycled blades are removed from the shell (preserving the tabs) flattened and arranged on a surface, the negative spaces between the blades gain strength. The surface the artist used was a gas tank modified into a sculptural mask. The slight relief…

Jeff Mann is an award-winning sculptor based in Canada whose works have been exhibited both nationally and in the United States. He describes his intuitive based artistic process as eschewing narrative or representation and being environmentally based. Unlike abstract or intuitive art, Mann's work often centers around the car and computers, which he believes define our culture. His diverse compositions are created using a variety of materials which include steel and aluminum.
