About this artwork
Urban by the worn surfaces and the qualities of the materials, this metal mask, SPOCK, combines recycled auto parts and shovels, rust patinas and variegated painted areas. The mask started by cutting, reversing and combining two shovels. The artist manipulated the materials extensively to form two facial planes , the jaw and upper face. Transmission parts and colours were added to focus the final character of the face. When the wall sculpture mask…
was done, it became a portrait of a well known character.

« I strive for the directness of children with the sensibilities of an adult. I want as little separation as possible between myself and the creative process. »
Jeff Mann is an award-winning sculptor based in Canada whose works have been exhibited both nationally and in the United States. He describes his intuitive based artistic process as eschewing narrative or representation and being environmentally based. Unlike abstract or intuitive art, Mann's work often centers around the car and computers, which he believes define our culture. His diverse compositions are created using a variety of materials which include steel and aluminum.
