About this artwork
The mask, VOODOO, combines some of the artist's favourite recycled car parts. Valve bodies (VB) are a part of automatic transmissions and can be thought of as circuit boards for oil. Since they are made from aluminum, they are easy to cut and to grind, but difficult to weld. VBs come in a variety of patterns, shapes and sizes. The artist was particularly interested in this VB both for it's shape and the intricacy of the pattern. The eyes of this…
piece are formed from identical automatic transmission parts. The artist has used these parts to print on fabric with also. Wanting to highlight the pattern of the VB, the artist used black for the background and sponged on white for the surface. Rather than use another colour of paint for the eyes, the artist used a rust patina of the eyes separates them from the painted surface.
