About this artwork
This salmon themed piece was inspired by the ocean stage of the adult coho or silver salmon’s life cycle.
It depicts the pull of the moon, the cycle of day and night, the sun the stars, and phases of the moon. And the life of salmon in the ebb and flow of the open ocean; between the tides and the salmon’s imminent return to the headwaters from whence they came.
Jeff makes these engraved and heat tinted metal wall art pieces using decorative techniques… he's been developing for the last 30 years or so. After enlarging the drawing onto plasma cut 14 gauge steel, he engraves it into the metal using a pneumatic engraver and grinding burrs.
He then uses a variety of abrasives to grind the surface of the wall panel to create grinding patterns and textures, suggest the forms and movement, and the feeling he wants to capture. The result is akin to a metal art painting.
Edition of 7, each is an original in its own right and can be commissioned in a size to best fit your space

« Beauty and harmony are vital in our lives. They nourish us as we experience great artworks. My challenge is to distill and convey what's inspired me clearly and harmoniously. »
Jeffrey Dean is an award-winning American sculptor whose works are deeply rooted in nature. Whether they are realistic or organic abstract, he enjoys incorporating narratives into some of his compositions. Dean utilizes techniques he has developed over the past thirty years in the creation of single and multi-layered metal and wood wall art. The interplay on the metal’s surface of variations in natural and artificial lighting gives them a range of characteristics not found in art made with other materials.
