About this artwork
This painting captures the soul of mysterious Prague in autumn — the moment when the city dissolves into mist and memory. The warm, cracked sky seems to breathe over the cool blue of the Vltava, where shadows of boats drift like forgotten thoughts.
I painted it from emotion rather than observation — recalling the way the city feels at dusk, when the air is thick with history and the scent of rain. Each layer of paint carries both warmth and melancholy… — the quiet beauty of endings, and the tenderness of things that fade.
The palette is built on earthy browns, golden ochres, and deep ultramarine blues — colours that speak of time and reflection. The impasto texture, rich and layered, allows light to catch on the ridges of paint, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. The style is expressive and abstract, where form dissolves into feeling, and the city becomes a landscape of memory rather than a place.

« I don't know who guides my brush when I paint. Sometimes I feel like an otherworldly force takes over. »
Jemal Gugunava, a Georgian-born artist trained at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, is currently based in the UK and Prague, Czechia.
He paints whatever captures his attention, enjoying a moment — urban landscapes, nature, intriguing objects, human faces, and conceptual figurative compositions. Despite the diversity of his subject matter, all Jemal’s works share an internal unity that goes far beyond simple stylistic continuity. This coherence comes not only from his distinctive brushwork, but also from the emotion and persistent philosophical undercurrent that runs through his paintings. He allows geometric lines and clear contours to emerge almost instinctively—a fusion of deeply rooted Eastern European visual traditions with the vibrant, angular elements of abstract art and postmodernism, where different artistic languages often intersect and coexist.
His credo: Paint what you love — let neither trend nor anyone dictate.
