About this artwork
This painting depicts a side-street view in Madrid looking through to the iconic "Gran Via", usually a bustling shopping area full of locals and tourists alike, however in this scene the streets appear to be empty- perhaps a reflection upon the short-lived silence of a city in pandemic lockdown.
In this painting the artist focuses on the geometry created by the architecture, and its interaction with the sunlight which creates dramatic, stark shadows… against an over-exposed afternoon sky.
The artist has chosen to leave many areas of this painting fresh and loose, revealing a deep orange ground color full of texture to contrast with the unsaturated greys and purples, and creates a contemporary feel by adding pops of saturated oranges and blues.

« An artist who specializes in contemporary, expressive urban and rural landscapes. »
Jenny Fermor is a British artist living in Spain whose works have been exhibited in solo exhibitions in Madrid. The common thread throughout most of her art relates to how light quality and shadow transform a landscape. Fermor creates atmospheres that are more than a representation of a place. She approaches landscapes as a composition of abstract shapes, endeavoring to find drama in the composition and color and shapes.
