About this artwork
In my cycle PECHBLENDE I deal in a very personal way with different representations of masculine roles and their perception.
Through the painterly self-portrait in the broader sense, I sensitively question archetypal male images with their ambivalent facets against the background of my own [sexual] identity, from macho to prince, and how these are placed in a context of desire, beauty and amorous interest through affirmation or appropriation. I… talk about playing with the poses, roles and clichés of [gay] masculinity - how existing images are adapted, reproduced and reinterpreted. These can oscillate between erotic attraction and lustful deterrence.
This raises questions: At what points do the characters become vulnerable? Where do their outlines become blurred? What still seems to be staged, and when does it become a fundamental requirement?

Jens Schubert, a painter and graphic artist, was inspired to create art by a creative family environment. He explores art using a variety of techniques; traditional brush and pen work mixes with airbrush, digital graphics and installations, always blurring the boundaries between painting and graphics. In his works he illustrates the universality and migration of symbols and signs, evoking an emotional reflection across cultures and generations.
