About this artwork
This image is part of the series PECHBLENDE (Bad Luck). In this cycle, I explore various representations of masculine roles and their perception in a very personal way. Through painterly self-portraiture in a broader sense, I sensitively examine archetypal images of masculinity, from macho to prince, against the backdrop of my own (sexual) identity, exploring their ambivalent facets and how these are placed within a context of desire, beauty, and…
amorous interest through affirmation or appropriation. I tell the story of the interplay with poses, roles, and clichés of (gay) masculinity—how existing images are adapted, reproduced, and reinterpreted.
They can oscillate between erotic attraction and pleasurable repulsion. This raises questions: At what points do the characters become vulnerable? Where do their outlines blur? What still seems like mere performance, and when does it become fundamental fulfillment?
