About this artwork
This painting is a meditation on death. During the spring 2018, the artist's immediate family received 2 diagnoses that scared the life out of her. Closer, named for a Joy Division album of the same name, is the image that came forth as she funneled her grief, anxiety, fear and prayers into painting. This image accurately reveals her notion of death and life through the shape of a classicizing mausoleum, transparent and calm. Death is not a solid,…
finite, locked chamber. Death’s truth is transition. Forever with her Maker, Jessica's mother is at rest and peace.

Jessica Puma, a painter nourished by her colorful Italian-American upbringing, harnesses an array of wet media techniques to make her pigments dance as paint. With a background marked by the canvases of Canalettos and the craftsmanship of builders, she weaves personal histories with architectural elements, her creations a testament to heritage and identity. Her works, visually fluid, navigate the symbiosis of stability and flux, reflecting the capricious nature of life's journey. In each stroke, Puma conjures a vivid emotional spectrum, inviting viewers into introspective odysseys of home, reflection, and metamorphosis.
