About this artwork
I spent two weeks with a poet from Ireland, living and working from my apartment studio. In the evenings of stressful days we'd retreat to the back of the parking lot where he'd smoke cigarettes and we chatted while. It became a ritual. The experience, as seemingly inconsequential as it was, became the fuel for his writing, and he produced a poem of the experience. Jessica Stepushyn’s art was, and still is, driven by the need to socially isolate herself from “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune”. The Canadian painter and sculptor’s compositions vary widely in their themes, from the concepts of particle and wave physics to geometry, color, and the subconscious. While Stepushyn ‘shuns realism’, she also isn’t averse to creating silly, generic, or superficial pieces. Her style, techniques, and mediums are in a constant state of evolution.
