About this artwork
"Saturn" (2019)
mixed media on canvas 72x72 inches
Saturn is the Roman titan of Time, father to the big 3 Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto, among others. A mythology adopted from the ancient Greeks (Saturn is Cronus). While Greek mythology paints a more honest and brutal picture of the gods and titans, these gods were revered and celebrated in Roman culture. Saturn was the titan of capital, wealth, agriculture, liberation and time. Wow! Cronus (Saturn)… was often depicted with a sickle (perhaps represented by the "swing motion" of the hanging paintbrush) and was associated with the harvest time. Often the gods of ancient mythology have a humanity about them, and I've included a subtle nod to that in my X's and O's, for his godly sons, daughters and lovers. XOXOX is just a more aggressive expression of affection. :)
