Discover the creation in interiors
This current body of work is informed by the natural world and forces such as tidal, gravitational, seasonal and chronological.
I walk most days along the coastline near my studio and document the changing horizon. I'm interested in how natural environments effect the psychology of human beings and the rituals we invent in order to interact with the natural world. This family of painting collages are a meditation on the horizon line and gravity.… I wanted the two to kiss in the centre of the canvas.
I work mainly with paper. For me it is a material charged with emotion and familiarity.
A birthday card, a thumbed paperback and a scribbled note are all often sources of inspiration.
Since I was small I have made sense of my experiences by scrap booking and my current work is an evolution of this simple childhood activity.

Jo Hummel
United Kingdom
« I seek out human behaviour when it is free to play, but every game has a structure... My work is an expression of both. »
Jo Hummel is a young British talent whose works have featured in exhibitions, prizes and publications across Europe, the UK and US. Striving to balance innate human expression with a form of functional and economic design, she undertakes an improvised process that combines collage, painting and installation. She pairs gestural human marks with structural hard-edged forms, resulting in a distinctive artistic signature that seamlessly marries spontaneity and control.
