About this artwork
The Folded Secret
In this photograph, I draw you into the heart of a blazing inferno of silk. For me, this poppy is not a static object, but a dramatic event. I stage the petals as a wild sea of crimson and scarlet, capturing their crumpled texture so sharply that you can almost hear the rustle of the fabric. Against the absolute stillness of the black background, I allow the light to dance only where it reveals the essence: the hidden gold. Three… striking, green stigmas form the center, surrounded by a chaotic, luminous wreath of pollen. I chose this close-up to eliminate distance. You are not standing before the flower, you are within it. It is my attempt to freeze the pure, untamed energy and fragile complexity of nature in a single, incandescent moment. A cosmic radiance in miniature.
Joachim Mantel works as a painter, photographer, and visual artist with an architectural background, which he further developed at ETH Zurich and Cooper Union in New York. In his work, he combines the analytical precision of an architect with the intuitive sensitivity of a painter, creating images that unite structure and mysticism. His photographs and drawings are characterized by atmospheric density, contemplative depth, and a respectful perspective on space, nature, and urban society. Mantel conveys a profound appreciation for the preciousness of the moment and invites conscious perception.
