About this artwork
While searching among recovered wood for a future sculpture I came across some pieces of walnut, discarded because of some insect damage. On close inspection I became mesmerized by the intricacy of the patterns the insects had created, burrowing on their journey through the tree.
Instead of covering up these imperfections and I wanted to champion and immortalize them by applying gold leaf, instead revealing the natural designs these tiny artists… had made. This is the first of a series all made from the same walnut tree.

Joel Douek is an experienced sculptor from the United States whose work has been featured in solo and group shows nationally. Driven by curiosity and a desire to experiment, Douek creates abstract sculptures out of steel, copper, brass, and wood that explore beauty in natural processes of aging. He uses various techniques of oxidation and often layers his pieces with gold leaf, creating eye-catching textures.
