About this artwork
Limited edition Giclée print. This photo is from my "Windows, Walls and Invisible Lines: Portraits of Life from the final Sanctuary" series. For two years I traveled the U.S.A. spending time with and photographing the amazing people who had taken sanctuary in churches to avoid deportation. Had they not self-imprisoned within the walls of these churches, they would have been forcibly removed and sent back to countries where physical abuse, violent…
crime, life-threatening poverty and even death awaited them, not to mention separating them from loved ones, including their small children. I believe that when we look into the eyes of these women, men and children, it becomes impossible not to see ourselves, our hopes, our dreams, our families, our fears. And in doing so, our racism and cruelty can be transformed into compassion and understanding. In Trump's second term, ICE can now enter churches and take immigrants. So historically, these photos may well represent the "final sanctuary."
