Filler on board, oak panel
My works are not painted but cast in oak panels using standard wall filler.
This work is part of Social Engineering, a series featuring stone imprints and a composition made with rulers and/or compasses, the instruments architects and engineers use to divide space. The series is titled after cognitive biases. Truth Judgment is a cognitive bias affecting our subjective perception of truth. One fun example is the “rhyme… as reason effect.” We tend to believe statements that rhyme are more truthful.
In this piece, I explored the fusion of raw textures and stark geometries. Cement and monochromatic tones evoke a sense of foundational rawness, while the minimalist composition invites contemplation. It embodies simplicity's power and the profound truths it can uncover. This artwork is meant to bring meditative energy into any space, offering a calm anchor to the bustling world around it.
« I am interested in process-based painting, and the profound solitude of the human mind. While exploring one, I sometimes try to formulate something about the other, and how it affects our relationship with the outside world. »
Johan Söderström is a nationally-distinguished Norwegian painter. His works consist of layers of filler where various fields are laid beside each other, like pieces in a puzzle, and he uses his unique technique to emphasize cracks, textures and other aspects the material's own history. He primarily explores the theme of human alienation, and aims to ensure that his aesthetic can be perceived in ways simple enough to diminish the distance between viewer and work.
