Filler on board, oak panel, stones
My works are not painted but cast in oak panels using standard wall filler (not cement).
This is the fifth piece in the Stone Conversations series, focusing on group dynamics. The alienated subject, driven by desire, seeks connection beyond itself, often through forming socio-cultural groups. These groups, varying in size and overlap, are created through language, which cuts them off from the whole. Yet language,… though precise semantically, becomes distorted when applied to material reality.
This poses challenges in naming groups like “Swedes” or “Artists.” We often rely on negative definitions, identifying groups by what they are not, to preserve internal homogeneity. The solution is to adopt the identifier as a master signifier—an indivisible sign. This works because emotional identification bypasses rational analysis, making the sign feel bodily and authentic rather than abstract or cerebral.
« I am interested in process-based painting, and the profound solitude of the human mind. While exploring one, I sometimes try to formulate something about the other, and how it affects our relationship with the outside world. »
Johan Söderström is a nationally-distinguished Norwegian painter. His works consist of layers of filler where various fields are laid beside each other, like pieces in a puzzle, and he uses his unique technique to emphasize cracks, textures and other aspects the material's own history. He primarily explores the theme of human alienation, and aims to ensure that his aesthetic can be perceived in ways simple enough to diminish the distance between viewer and work.
