Filler on board, pine panel
My works are cast in pine panels using standard wall filler (not cement).
Language is flat—superficial not for lack of meaning, but spatially: it spreads across every surface without touching matter. I’ve drawn overlapping speech bubbles to suggest depth—the word becomes flesh.
Anyone who has entered comment sections knows the grotesque vitality there. In those uninhibited exchanges, language ferments into something… alien—a life form of words detached from meaning. Sense disintegrates and reforms in convulsive motion.
The clustered bubbles, with their four hooks, recall a swastika on steroids—swollen flesh circling itself. Today’s fascism differs from the twentieth century’s, which sought unity through purity: one people, one voice. Now the far right is a swarm of contradictions—cynicism and blind faith, conspiracy and nostalgia—dismantling truth. It no longer rises from language but from the bodily, the chaotic matter Lacan called the Real.

« I am interested in process-based painting, and the profound solitude of the human mind. While exploring one, I sometimes try to formulate something about the other, and how it affects our relationship with the outside world. »
Johan Söderström is a nationally-distinguished Norwegian painter. His works consist of layers of filler where various fields are laid beside each other, like pieces in a puzzle, and he uses his unique technique to emphasize cracks, textures and other aspects the material's own history. He primarily explores the theme of human alienation, and aims to ensure that his aesthetic can be perceived in ways simple enough to diminish the distance between viewer and work.
